First
exposure to harness racing - Long time ago! I
mostly watched and bet thoroughbreds until a friend of mine
suggested I get in to standardbred racing because they race
more often.
Number of years I've owned horses - Eleven
Best horse I've owned - Weekend Bernie. A homebred As Promised
colt who was extremely successful in the Alberta sires stakes
program as a two-year-old and was crowned the horse of the
year. He was second to American Ideal in a track record
of 1:55.1 at Stampede Park last year and finished second
in the Nat Christie elimination and fourth in the final
this year.
Greatest Thrill in harness racing - My first stakes win
with Samantha Lee in the Gold Pan Filly Final in June, 1995.
I flew to Calgary to watch the race and could barely walk
to the winner's circle because my legs were so shaky!
What I love about the sport - A stakes win, especially
if the horse is a homebred.
Advice
I would give to someone interested in becoming a horse owner
- Don't be afraid to get involved in a small
way at first. Partnerships and shared ownership is a great
way to get your feet wet without risking a lot. If you find
you like it, and most people do, you can work your way up
and invest more.
